Directions: Drive from the White River Entrance 3 miles to a parking area just beyond the Fryingpan Creek bridge, elevation 3800 feet.
Trail Notes: Got a late start this morning and there was some concern about how much of the hike to Summerland we would be able to enjoy. As fate would have it things worked out quite well.
We hit the trail about 11 in the morning, there were about 30 cars in the parking area. Doing Summerland late in the season is a wise move since it is one of the last places to melt out - translation bugs linger here longer than elsewhere. The trail starts off quite mildly for the first hour or so working its way gradually up through one of the nicest old growth areas in the park. The environs are mostly fir and hemlock with an occasional cedar thrown in for good measure.
As the trail winds on it gains some steepness. The trail shortly joins Frying Pan creek and follows it for quite a distance. This part of the trail is almost always in the shade since their are high valley walls to the east and west. After about an hour the valley opens up and you can view Mt. Rainier down the valley. Shortly after this you will come to a foot bridge crossing the creek and continue up along Frying Pan creek on the eastern side for another ten or fifteen minutes.
Here the trail takes becomes a series of switch backs which are gentle and only last for about 10-15 minutes before giving way to Summer Land itself. Hoorah you are finally here . Once here you will have a very nice view of Little Tahoma and Mt Rainier. Also of note is that there is very well maintained wooden shelter guarded by a myriad of chipmunks. Some of them are quite well fed. .
Once you get here you might find a bunch of folks around the shelter. To get a little solitude for lunch go north towards the camp sites and find a nice place to eat. After lunch we headed up the trail towards Frying Pan gap until the sun began to shade things. At this point we turned around and headed back down the trail. It was an uneventful return. I have to say this is a wonderful hike done late in the season. Doing it earlier can be kinda risky in terms of bugs.
