Gold Creek · David · Jun 25, 2008

I Hiked this just before the 2007 snows. I was lucky in that I was offered a ride from the parking lot the mile plus to the trailhead by a wilderness official. The parking lot now is at Gold Creek Pond picnic area (see John's review) adding a full mile to the pre-hike hike. Bummer. Once on the trail, well …

Lipsy Creek & Otter Falls · Jennifer · Jun 22, 2008

When we hiked this last weekend, the falls were MUCH more impressive than what is shown in the photo above. This year (2008), with the late snowmelt, it seems June was the ideal time to do this hike. The falls far exceeded my expectations. They were spectacular - or very nice, anyhow. They were certainly as nice as the Falls …

This year (2008) it seems mid-June is "early season." In any event, I attempted this with a friend this weekend. We found the part through the woods easier than expected. It is steep, no doubt, but doable. If you can hike Granite Mountain or Mt. Dickerson, you'll have no problem with the forested / ridgeline section of Mailbox Peak. I …

Lake Serene and Bridal Falls · psbadventures · Jun 22, 2008

I did this hike today with my 9, 7 and just turned 4 year old boy. I started the hike at 6:00 pm and we made it to the upper snow field before the lake at 8:00. It was too difficult to traverse with my kids, so we headed back down. Bridal veil falls was full and beautiful. The views …

I did this hike on the first day of summer, June 20, 2008.

Great day for a hike, it was just warm and sunny enough to feel the warm breeze coming down off the mountain. Usually I try to hike when it is a little overcast but the canopy gave just enough break to keep you from burning up. …

Steap at first, and rather rocky the whole way up. Very good hike for people just starting out, or for a quick day trip.

I did this hike June 17, 2008.

I am not a huge hiker but am using hiking as a means to rehab a neck injury I recently sustained. A couple people who seem to hike a lot had told me Si was a good hike to get in shape with. After these comments and reading some on the internet, …

Did this hike just afew days ago (early June). It was amazing. Brought my two dogs and they had a blast going up the steep incline. Careful about the wind once you pass the moraine. It picked up and started snowing on me and the temperature dropped like a rock. I didn't anticipate such cold conditions at the top and …

I hiked Mailbox Peak on May 30, 2008.

First I will say, this hike is very much worth it. When I started at 1200 it was overcast and cool. By the time I reached the top at around 1415 it was a beautiful sunny day with the temperature at the top perfectly cool and crisp. The views were great …

Hiked on Memorial Day. Nicely maintained trail with soft forest floor and boardwalks/stairs where necessary. There are still a few muddy spots but nothing overly slippery. Don't stop after the two falls...keep going & you'll connect into the Iron Horse trail. Take a right and head over to Rattlesnake Lake, or take a left and a short walk (stay right …

Spectacular scenery from the top on a clear day! Be careful to keep track of the cairns (pile of rocks to mark the trail) at the top as they get smaller, and smaller. Route finding down with a late start in low lighting could be disastrous, or in snow without crampons,or an ice- axe. Highly recommended hike/climb with an early …

My hike to Mt. Rainier was amazing! There was a great view from the top and it was fun.
But it was also hard to climb so I rested for a while. I was also pretty exciting and advendturous!!!

Thanks!

Granite Mountain · MPR · May 27, 2008

This was my first attempt and questioned if it would be too early due to the heavy snow fall this year. It didn't take long to deteched the affects of the melting snow. Trails were very wet, mini creeks everywhere, downd trees(caused by slides) etc. Snow was very heavy at 3,000 ft, making it very hard if not impossible to …

Tiger Mountain · Anonymous · May 26, 2008

I went up the West Tiger 3 Trail and found it was a fun but challenging ascent. The trail is well kept and fairly wide, and no parts are particularily difficult or steep. However, the trail as a whole elevates fairly quickly and it does start to wear you down. The forest is nice, but there aren't many views, even …

My second time going up this month and now the majority of the snow has melted. Cars could almost reach the trail head but couldnt for 1 or 2 patches of snow. For about 3/4 of the trail there was zero snow and it made climbing very easy. The last streatch there was plenty of snow but most was compacted …

Pinchy the Hobbit and I did Mailbox Peak on Sunday May 25th...

We left the trailhead at about 7:00am and made the peak by 11:00. My advice to anyone thinking of doing this route is to read the warning sign at the trailhead and take it seriously! Trailhead altitude: 868ft.Bring lots of water! There is no water available …

Lake Serene and Bridal Falls · Cindy · May 25, 2008

Began at the trail around 9:15 AM. Went to Bridal Veil first. Had to cross a snow field over some runoff to get up there. Good to have poles. Then, hiked until about a mile of the lake, and had all snow on the "trail." We picked our way over to the lake area because the trail wasn't visible. 10-12 …

Got caught in a lightning storm with my 8 year old son. This trail is a little scary when wet, otherwise it's a great hike. Some really interesting canyons on your way up. Fine for kids if they obey your every command, should be good hikers. There are a lot of sharp dropoffs from a very narrow trail. Well worth …

Great hike, not for kids. I thought it was easy. Had missed my climbing partners, so I was trying to catch them, took less than a hour from bottom to top, but I was cruzing. A slug should be able to make it in under 2 hours. When I got to the top, there were young kids jumping around. This …

This hike is very easy. I saw many families with young kids and dogs on the way up and down. The waterfall is extremely beautiful with lots of water pouring down due to the snowmelt. This is a good starter hike for this early in the season since many other trails are still covered with snow especially this year.

There is a little fun scrambling and the ranger is quite informative. I believe the ranger tour is $10/person, and you would be wise to reserve a spot in advance, particularly on weekends. Tours leave in the morning and in the late afternoon; the sunlight is supposed to be at the best, glowing red in the late afternoon. Personally, I …

Well as an old East Coast boy , I never got many mid May snow capped day hikes before. Mailbox Peak is steep, Mailbox Peak is difficult, but Mailbox Peak is worth every step.
